thirty seven (antonio occulto, super-villain)

Antonio Occulto, pencil, 2 3/8" x 3 1/8"

Watch out, Richard Ess*… Antonio Occulto has recently escaped from maximum security, and havoc lies ahead…
OK, I’m sure Antonio is a nice guy but I couldn’t resist putting that one out there. I told Antonio he was my next super-dude, so I’ve gone outside of my little box a bit and drawn him as a comic book illustration. All the same, just a bit different in the finish.
You can see Antonio’s painting of me here, or check out his very cool and unique paintings (as well as other things, including a very cool collection of typewriters) on his blog, .
This is portrait 37 of 100. Go here to see previous portraits, or learn more about this project. To enter to win the 100th portrait (acrylic painting) go here.
I’ve included some process photos for fun:

sketching basic shape & proportions

placing features, outlines...

working out shadows, finalizing features & clothing

filling in shadows, final contrast adjustments

Throw back comic style, as opposed to the Japanese style that predominates the market. Love love!

Yeah, not much use for manga here… I have a suitcase full of comic books from the seventies and eighties… (first issue of She-Hulk, any takers?) Also one of my personal favorites: Captain Canuck. My hero.

ACHTUNG! LISTEN TO ME! I’M A SUPER-VILLAIN ( or nearly). Nobody is BAD AS ME. 🙂
    Thank you very much, MASTER.

This one is one of your best. Sometimes I think its harder to capture an image with fewer lines and minimal shading. Very nice.
