To be realistic, I’m not a ‘realist’ – but labels can be confusing. I agree with Karen about ‘between’. Your painting is stunning…
Thanks John. I’ve been trying to work out who I am as a realist for a while now. I think for me it no longer has to mean a realistic looking image, but has more to do with honesty. Those who can be completely honest in their art-making have a special ability, one that I will forever be trying to master…
I can be either a realist or not, depending on my frame of mind. Realism can be much more frightening to create than the abstract because there is always pressure (often self-induced) to be perfect. Therein lies the paradox: real is not necessarily perfect. Fabulous job on this work!

I totally understand what you mean about the pressure; I learned at a young age that I could draw realistically and since then that’s what everyone expected of me…”Wow, that’s amazing. You should do this for a living!”… I’ve taken the last couple of years or so trying to un-learn those high pressure, rigid ways of thinking. Really starting to have fun now.
